Vizio Plasma TV Shut off?
It is a 42 inch TV. I was watching it and the screen just shut off. The “Vizio” light was on, as if the TV were on, but nothing on the screen. We’ve had this tv for about 5 months. Any ideas what it could be?
Did you lose your cable or TV signal? Was the Vizio light the same color that it normally is, or was/is it a different color? The reason for asking is that the TV itself (or the DVR if one is connected to the set) could have switched to stand-by mode if it received no signal input or no input command (such as changing the channel or adjusting the volume) for a certain period of time. This “self-protection” feature is available on some TV sets to reduce the chance of burn-in (a static display on the screen that can imprint itself on the screen mask) or to reduce deterioration of the backlight lamp.
Another possibility is that a component in the set overheated and caused the picture display circuitry to fail or go into a “self-protection mode.”
You didn’t state whether the set is currently working or not. Does it power back up and display a picture normally? If so, it might have been just a glitch or power surge. If it does not power up and display a picture, try unplugging the TV from the power source, wait about thirty seconds, and then plug it back in and try turning it on again. It may be necessary to press and hold the power button for 5 to 10 seconds. If it still does not power up normally and display a picture, then you apparently have an electrical/electronic problem with the set, and should seek a qualified repair facility to get it checked/repaired. It should still be under warranty.
If the set does turn on and seems to be working properly (at least for the moment), you need to keep an eye on it to determine if this is a recurring or intermittent problem. If it does the same thing again, try to note how long the set had been operating at the time of failure, the room temperature, and anything else that would help a service technician troubleshoot the problem. Intermittent random failures for no apparent reason or cause are the most difficult to find and repair.
Please note that there are several other things that could be happening with your set – I’m just giving you the most likely scenarios based on the limited information you provided. Good luck and I hope it all works out OK for you.
Note: While Vizio TVs appear to have a decent/good reputation for quality and reliability, that doesn’t mean that they are failure-proof. Any complex electronic device can suddenly fail (temporarily, intermittently, or permanently) due to defects or deteriorations in an electronic component.
